About Me:

Just A Quick Hello!

Hello! I am Jack Dingwall and I am a first year student studying Animation at Newcastle University. I am new to blogging so i am going to keep this short and sweet. I previously studied at Teeside University and quickly realised that it simply wasnt for me, the change of scenery, the hours of travel everyday...it just wasnt for me so i returned to my previous place of study, Newcastle College to study animation. I have always been into drawing, espicailly mechs and machinary, however it wasnt until i studied within Newcastle college that i found a passion for 3D moddelling and it is now is now set in stone as what i want to do for a job within the animation industry. On this blog ill be posting many various tasks and projects that i will be working on, even if its just a random model that i decide go create, I will try to show my processes the best i can.

Story Telling Hand in & Moving on to Year 3

Well...I am all handed in. I must admit I am a little disappointed in myself. There was a lot more development work that I had to do than I noticed. I was not able to achieve the amount of development work hat I wanted to do, and although I am sad about that, I am still overwhelmed with joy that I was able to finish my animation. This animation was a massive task to undertake and I am very proud that I was able to complete it. Buts that is enough about work, I am all done now.  Now begins the road to year 3. Next year will be my final year of study and I need to ensure that I am prepared. Throughout the Christmas break I did no work. I took a massive break, and although I will be taking a break during summer, I need to ensure that I am putting all my free time to a useful cause. Throughout the summer I will be updating my skills in various different types of software. With each new skill I learn I will ensure to post them within this blog. So make sure you keep an eye on the blog o...

Story Telling Brief: Adrift (FINAL)

Well everyone, I have finally finished! This animation took such a long time to make but it was a truly remarkable experience! This has been my favorite project so far, for both years! I have been able to merge my passion for gaming with my project work and it has been incredibly fun! My hand in is only a few days away now, and all that left to do is touch up my development work. I have definitely left by development work on the back burner, an although I have a lot of catching up to do, this animation made it all worth it. I cannot describe the amount of fun I have had creating this animation! Not only have I learned some new techniques regarding post production software, rendering and animation, but I have also learned a new 3D programme, Blender. Blender is a great 3D programme, I never thought I would be able to move away from Maya but Blender offers new features that I have never even heard of. Everything that I have wished to achieve in Maya, I have achieved in Blender. I am rema...

Digital Story Telling - Research, Part 6

Sidequest This idea is heavily influenced by the YouTube channel I looked at called butter side down and the game Skyrim. The idea is to have the same format at the butter side down videos where it in the view of the character so the hand and feet will be visible. The idea is I would be sitting on a chair and my tummy will rumble. A quest will pop up saying get food, but on the way, loads of side quests will pop up and confuse me, in a rush to get them all done I will start braking things burning the food making a fire and destroy the house. Running out the house I will look up to a huge meteoroid coming for the earth and a side quest will pop up ‘escape the planet’ and it will end. It will be a great chance for VFX. I also want to include puppets that I will be adding too as they look amazing and fun

Story Telling Brief: Final Piece Progress 6

Hi everyone, this is going to be the final update for my 'Story telling' animation before I finish the final scene. I have over a week before hand-in and I yet to finish my animation an render it all. However, this week I was given some amazing news. A fellow student in my class (who is a talented musician) has offered to create a soundtrack for my animation for free. We have been discussing the soundtrack for the past few days and the few sound bites that he has sent over have been amazing and I cannot wait to show you all. Below you will see some of the final rendered scenes within my animation. There is a few more tweaks I need to make before I can show you the full animation. At this point, I am finalizing the last scene before I render the animation and take it into post editing software. I should be done just before hand-in which leaves me with enough time to finalize my development work. I will be back next week with a final update blog on my animation. I cannot wait for...

Digital Story Telling - Research, Part 5

Misunderstood Monster  It’s no secret that my favorite mystical creature is a dragon and since seeing smaug in the hobbit I have really wanted to create a project around one and I had fun with fire VFX in the last unit it would be nice to revisit and create something a bit more ambush. I do not want something slayed but instead seeing that the monster was misunderstood. I thought about the idea of having the real creature being something like a sheep (kind of like in how to train your dragon where the sheep dress up as dragons so the dragons will stop eating the) and accusations again the ‘dragon’ were just random events

Story Telling Brief: Final Piece Progress 5

Hi everyone, I am afraid the next few posts are going to be very short. I only have two weeks left to create this animation and I still have a lot to do. For this post I am simply going to show you the first final scene. I was able to full finish the astronaut scene and now I am working on the new scenes that will hopefully be revealed next week providing everything goes well. I hope you guy enjoy my first scene. It was a long and tough journey to finish this scene, but its finally done and I could not be more happier with the results! See you all next week! P.S. At this point I am working on multiple new scenes so hopefully Ill have some more to show next week!

Digital Story Telling - Research, Part 4

Falling down the street  As I already have a stair idea I might change this to something else. I got the though form an animation I saw in a previous course where it’s a shot of a street and someone is falling down it (slipped on a skateboard) and as they do the street turns into chaos, unfortunately, I could not find this but It would have been a perfect example as it was live footage that was covered in VFX to create all the distraction that is happening.  But an animation that is something similar to that short film would be  Jinxy Jenkins & Lucky Lou by Mike Bidinger & Michelle Kwon where we meet two characters a boy who is incredibly unlucky and bad things happen to him and a girl who is incredibly lucky and nothing bad happens to them. So, these two characters end up in a dangerous situation due to the boy’s bad luck but once the girl takes over they end up getting a series of events that help them survive traffic an more And my f...
