Ashley Wood Robot infuence (RESEARCH)

As I usually work in 3D software when I got my unit for character design I was a bit lost. I knew what I wanted I asked for advice on what I should look at to get my style onto a 2D format.

It was suggested to me that I should look at Ashley Wood she does a lot of paintings of the robot in WW1. the paintings are amazing and they are my main source of reference and influence right now so I want to talk a little bit about them.

The first one I want to talk about is this one above. As you will see below most of her works is very light and the tones are almost the same as the next. This one is a little different. The colours are so much more defined. I really prefer the dark tones lighting up the detail and the white clouds help the robot and person stand out more. I just really like the colour pallet in this one. I really like all the earthy tones and how dynamic the scene is. It's not static and it really looks like someone has just paused and captured the scene in a painting which looks great. The robot itself is amazing too I love all the little details and the styles it's painting in. It's really realistic but the detail is blocked in and not defined yet you can still make out everything on it.

The backs are a lot less defined in the painting but I love it for that reason. The fact that there are loads of robots all in a row really suites the dull tones. It just shows that there all the same and they're not unique. There isn't anything special about them so they aren't much showing them off and for that reason, it works really well. I am loving the oval shape of the robots most of the examples that v looked at have all had rounded heads. and they have been huge rust buckets nothing futuristic and that is what I love. I have always loved chunky/ clunky robots nothing futuristic just old parts put together.

Lastly, I need to talk about this painting. this is an example of the colours were really toned down and almost the same but that is the reason that the scene is so nice. I love how rusty and orange the robot is with the patches of clean white on him but in front, the soldiers are also orange and it makes sit look like off scene there are explosions and fire that is lighting up the scene.

Overall I love her work and it's going to help me design and stylise my idea so much. It has help motivates me as now I'm really excited to see what I could make. I'm still going to look at more artist and references though so stay tuned.

Pixel Art and Zbrush Dragon Progress Update:

Over the past week i have made significant progress throughout both of my chosen subjects, Zbrush and Pixel art. Ad for my pixel art characters, i have decided to create three characters that are all completely different from each other. These three characters will resemble my fire team form the game destiny, Me and my two friends. The character below is my character and you can see that although it is pixel art, it shares no characteristics from the last design, they are all going to be completely different and i cannot wait to see how all three compare to each other once they are finished. As for my dragon, i was able to add a lot more detail to both the horns and face. I even added an additional two horns to bring the character more to life and give him a more interesting silhouette. As you can see the character also has antlers and wisps coming from his chin, this was heavily inspired from Haku the white dragon from the Studio Ghibli movie 'Spirited Away.' Although I te...
